Do you want to run your own painting business? Anybody can get a paint job. Starting your own business is different than just picking up a painting job.
This plan is not just about how the business will run, but also where you want to be at a certain time in the future. Will you be retired at a certain age? Will you be completely “out of the bucket” meaning that you will no longer paint rather that you will spend all of your time managing your business and selling paint jobs? These are highly personalized goals and they are to be decided by you only. These decisions are pretty much a reflection of your skills and desires, if you like to paint, then you might not want to sell your jobs, but if you want to focus on growth then you might want to get “out of the bucket”, thereby freeing your time and energies to grow.
The point is that you will be a better situated painting contractor if you spend some time thinking about your plans. One of the most enlightening books I ever read was the “E-Myth” by Michael Gerber. The “E” part is about being an entrepreneur, and a lot of self-employed people are not free but rather they are owned by their businessextra resources. They would be better off being employed by someone else rather than being a slave to their own business.
The theme that runs through the book is that people believe that they own the business, but in reality the business owns them. So, for some people it is better to be an employee rather than business owners. What Michael Gerber says is that if the business owns you, then you have less freedom, and possibly work 60 hours per week for the same money that an employee of McDonald’s will make, with a lot less work, and responsibility.
You can make a lot of money being a painting contractor. Running your own painting business can be very rewarding give yourself a good start and you won’t have to backtrack to fix problems after the fact. It takes planning. Once you start your business, plan on doing everything legally, from paying taxes, paying your employees, and keeping the right kind and amounts of insurances. You can have a great future and business as a painting contractor with good planning.
